The inaugural women’s basketball season is in the books at Lawrence Technological University. During the season the team laid the ground work for the future of women’s basketball at LTU.

“This year brings experience,” said Head Coach Mary Pinkowski. “There were four or five close games we should have won. We would have won them if we had the experience.”

Still, Coach Pinkowski said a highlight of this season was how some of the freshmen stepped up in some key situations.  She was also pleased by the team’s cohesiveness.

“One of the biggest things in women’s sports is the chemistry of the team. Our team really clicked well,” said Coach Pinkowski.

The Lady Blue Devils finished the season with a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference record of 5-17 and an overall record of 7-19. The Lady Blue Devils did better at home with a 5-7 record while going 2-12 on the road.

LTU’s ranked sixth in field goal percentage out of the conferences’ 12 teams with 39.6 percent. In the three-point field-goal category LTU ranked ninth with 25.7 percent. However, three-pointers scored against the defense put LTU in third place with 26.3 percent. The Lady Blue Devils finished 10th in free-throws with 64.5 percent.

The five Lady Blue Devils listed among the conferences’ top stats leaders were led by junior forward Jackie Hood (Lake Orion, MI) whose name appears in seven statistical categories. She was eighth in minutes played with 834, averaging 32.42 minutes per game in 26 games, 10th in field-goal percentage at 44.7 percent, 11th in steals with 48, and 13th in scoring with a total of 340 points, averaging 13.1 points per game. Hood also made all three rebound categories finishing fifth overall with 229, fourth in defensive rebounds with 139, and fifth in offensive rebounds with 90.

Freshman forward Hali Butler (Fairport, OH), ranked eighth in total rebounds with 189, 12th in offensive rebounds with 70, and 12th in defensive rebounds with 119. Butler was 15th in scoring with 331 points in 26 games, averaging 12.7 points per game.

Junior guard Brenda Davis (Lansing, MI) ranked eighth in assists and assist/turnover ratio with 82 assists and 86 turnovers in 26 games and 14th in steals with 43. Making 36 three-pointers in 26 games puts freshman guard Allison Bicknell (Waterford, MI) in 12th place. Freshman center Jazmine Brown (Harrison Twp.) blocked 15 shots in 26 games, landing her in 15th place.

The WHAC acknowledged five Lady Blue Devils for their accomplishments during the season. Butler was named to the All-Newcomer Team. Freshman guard Karlie Dieck (Lake Fenton, MI) was named to the Champions of Character Team. Davis and junior forward Jill Carland (Hartland, MI) received All-Academic Team honors.
