Brandon Keur (51) helped LTU control the boards in the victory against Northwestern Ohio.

Lawrence Technological University’s men’s basketball team took the floor on Nov. 20 in search of its first victory of this inaugural season, and that mission was accomplished with an exciting 64-61 victory over Northwestern Ohio.

With more than 200 loud fans cheering them on, the Blue Devils got off to a sloppy start, turning the ball over 13 times in the first half. However, clutch outside shooting from Anthony Sisson and Jake Mullin kept the game close, with Northwestern Ohio taking a 33-25 lead into halftime.
An advantage in bench scoring (25-12) and rebounding (41-34) for the Blue Devils was the difference in the game and helped them claw their way back to take control.

LTU extended its lead to 11 points with under five minutes left, but the Racers were able to capitalize on errant passes from the Blue Devils to narrow the lead. LTU was forced to make free throws late to hold off a Racers charge, giving the Blue Devils their first win in 48 years, 64-61.

Jake Mullin’s (4-6) three-point shooting helped in his game-high 15 points. Down low, it was the three big men – Brad Watterworth, Brandon Keur, and Jon Osantowski – who stood out on both ends of the court.

“Everyone really stepped up their game and played fantastic,” said junior guard Anthony Sisson, one of the co-captains. “I was proud of the young guys who showed a lot of maturity making adjustments in the second half.”

The victory gives LTU a 1-1 record in Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference play.

LTU’s next tip-off is Wednesday, Nov. 28, against the Marygrove Mustangs at 7:30pm.
