We all know that the United States and Michigan in particular face major challenges in the global economy. At the same time the opportunities for young people with a good education have never been greater.

In good economic times and bad, graduates of Lawrence Technological University have long found that their degrees open doors to exciting careers across the country and around the world. That’s why the University was ranked in the top 20 percent for the return on investment in a bachelor’s degree in the BloombergBusinessweek national survey released earlier this year.

We are very proud of our ground-breaking leadership curriculum for all four years of undergraduate study. LTU’s Office of Leadership Programs oversees all academic and extracurricular programs that are dedicated to leadership education and development, including community service. The goal is to ensure that all LTU students develop their leadership skills with an emphasis on character, integrity, and professionalism.

As you progress through four years of the leadership initiative, you will participate in a number of volunteer projects. Giving something back to the greater community is part of being an effective professional, and you also gain the personal satisfaction and growth that comes from helping other people.

I urge you to become actively involved in extracurricular activities on campus.  LTU is a member of the National Association of Independent Athletics, and this year we are adding five new varsity teams, including men’s and women’s basketball. Participation in athletics at the junior varsity and club level continues to set new records. LTU also has more than 60 student clubs and organizations, as well as a very active student government. Please take advantage of these opportunities to connect with more people on campus and develop or strengthen your leadership skills.

Of course, the quest for a lifetime of success begins in the classroom. Students who prepare themselves well academically are building a solid foundation for their future. You will benefit from small class sizes and experienced faculty who provide a real-world, hands-on, “theory and practice” education. Those students who pursue internships, co-op experiences and other “on the job” opportunities will be even better prepared. Enriching student experience is a top priority for our distinguished faculty and staff.

An LTU education also gives you the ability to understand and take advantage of change. Every year the faculty, administration and staff make improvements to the academic curricula and the overall campus experience so that graduates will be better prepared. The University’s laptop program provides every undergraduate with software currently used in the business sectors related to the courses they are taking.

Economic conditions have made the job market very competitive, but plenty of jobs are available for graduates with a strong educational background who are ready to hit the ground running. Even greater opportunities await graduates able to respond to major economic shifts taking place around the world. That is why we are strengthening entrepreneurship programs.

In a global economy, knowledge of other cultures, economies and societies is a great personal and business asset. At LTU you have the opportunity to meet and get to know fellow students from more than 40 other countries. Don’t let barriers develop between you and people from other cultures.

Whether you are coming from Michigan or from half way around the world, you have the opportunity to learn from your fellow students who have other experiences and perspectives to share. College is a great time to open your mind to new people as well as new ideas.
