  • The air was filled with color when students, faculty and staff gathered outside the UTLC on March 28 to celebrate the coming of spring with a spirited rendition of Holi, the Festival of Colors celebrated in India and other countries.
  • Dousing yourself and everyone else in a rainbow of color is part of the celebration of Holi.
  • Color combatants return to the table for more ammunition.
  • Dean of Students Kevin Finn (R) decided that this student did have enough color on him.
  • What’s a celebration of spring without some colorful dancing?

The Lawrence Tech campus community celebrated the cultural diversity of its student body with an international festival that started March 28 with a spirited celebration of Holi, the festival of colors, and concluded March 30 with the documentary “Salaam dunk” about a women’s basketball team in Iraq.

Holi is a traditional celebration of the coming of spring in India and other countries with a Hindu population. For centuries it has been celebrated by people throwing scented powder at each other.

Dean of Students Kevin Finn and his staff organized a Lawrence Tech version of this ritual outside the UTLC that gave students, staff and faculty the opportunity to enjoy a sunny spring day.

Other International Festival activities included:

  • A World Dance Fair at the Ridler Field House with dancers representing countries from around the globe.
  • International Career Solutions, a seven-day seminar series to help international students develop career skills outside their home countries.
  • A Cultural Mosaic Panel Discussion in the UTLC gallery. International students described their home countries and talked about living in a different culture.
  • “The Thrill of Victory” celebration of sports in the Science Building that included a talk by former major league baseball pitcher Frank Tanana and a documentary movie about a women’s basketball team in Iraq.
