Lawrence Tech students participate in math modeling marathon

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

By Ruth Favro

Lawrence Tech faculty Ruth Favro (L) and Guang-Chong Zhu (R) join students who participated in Marathon Mathematical Contest for Modeling. Standing left to right are Christine Jackson, Dan McGee, Ryan Hollingsworth, and Jamie MacLennan. Kneeling are Jovan Popovich and Rifat Sheik.

A big thank-you from the College of Arts & Sciences to the nine students who participated in the 2012 Mathematical Contest in Modeling on Feb. 9-13. The students put in enormous amounts of time and effort, and some excellent teamwork, to produce a research paper on a challenging problem, working to the last minute to polish the result.

Four days is a short time to research a problem, model and solve it, validate the model, and write a paper, plus keep your class and work commitments.  It is a credit to Lawrence Tech to have students participating in an activity at this level. We hope to know by the end of March how the papers did against the other teams from around the world.

To see more photos of our competitors, go to the blog of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS).

A special thanks also goes to our support team this year: MCS Chair David Bindschadler and Marilyn Wiseman in the MCS office, Associate Professors Chris Cartwright and Michael Merscher for food delivery, the Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office for the great cookies, and especially to LTU Campus Safety for their help over the weekend.
