  • Head Basketball Coach Tom Kempf and Athletic Director Scott Trudeau (center) check out some of the basketball talent at Lawrence Tech at the mini basketball court set up in the atrium as part of Winterfest.
  • The preliminary rounds of the broomball tournament had to be moved to the Southfield Sports Arena when unseasonably warm weather shut down the temporary rink behind North Housing.
  • Vanessa Woods gets some help from Justin Shaffer, Jake Montgomery, and Dan Hoefler in displaying the new Winterfest jerseys and hats to best advantage.
  • Javon Hunter, Howard Randolph, Phil Lucas, and Christina Milne were Winterfest student celebrity chefs who got behind the counter at the RFoC to cook up a batch of poutine, a Canadian favorite of fries topped with cheese and gravy.
  • Javon Hunter and Howard Randolph serve up their culinary masterpiece at the opening of Winterfest activities in the RFoC dining area.

The weather hasn’t cooperated for the outdoor activities planned for Winterfest, but there are still plenty of ways for students to enjoy a break from the studying grind during Lawrence Tech’s first Winterfest.

Skating on the portable rink behind Housing North had to be cancelled due to extremely wet conditions caused by unseasonably warm temperatures, and the preliminary rounds of the broomball tournament were held at the Southfield Sports Arena instead.

The snow art competition scheduled for Thursday was cancelled when warm weather made it impractical to truck in snow. Instead students will see some snow of a more permanent variety in the atrium instead.

The ice sculpture competition is still on for Friday, but the time may be changed to slow down the inevitable melting if temperatures remain well above freezing in the afternoon.

Still on the agenda are the Winterfest Bash at North Housing on Friday, the Miss Lawrence Tech Scholarship Pageant on Saturday, and hockey games on Friday and Saturday.
