IT Service Delivery introduces HotSpot printers for smartphones

 Help Desk technician Todd James (L) and Applications Analyst Ammar Abdulahad of IT Service Delivery demonstrate how to print a document from the HotSpot printer in the atrium of the Buell Management Building. Lawrence Tech students, faculty and staff can now print black-and-white files for free from their smartphones, tablets or laptops on four Ricoh HotSpot printers installed in the library, the atrium of the Buell Management Building, the Architecture Resource Computing Center (ACRC), and the Architecture Resource Center. Color printing is 50 cents per standard page and $1 for 11×17 pages, and payment is accepted through PayPal or a credit card. With no software or drivers to download and no networks or third-party apps needed, LTU students and employees can print by simply sending an email. To print a document from a smartphone, forward an attachment to the email address of the printer location (see below). A print release code will be emailed back that can be entered into the printer to have the document printed. Laptop and tablet users can also utilize the service by going to the URL for the printer and entering an email address and the document in order to get the release code. The new service is designed to make it easier for students to print out the documents they need for their classes, according to Ammar Abdulahad, an applications analyst in Lawrence Tech’s Office of IT Service Delivery. “We know that our students are getting many of their documents on their smartphones or tablets, and so it makes sense to make it easier for them to print those documents,” Abdulahad said.
