Wednesday, August 31st, 2011
![]() Judge Jerry Lindman (L) and Make Your Mark Coordinator Katie Hayes (R) congratulate the winners of the competition held in the spring semester. In the back row are Brian Game and Jamiil Gaston, and in the front are Megan Zeigler, Dee Hewitt, and Krysta Foster. The Office of Leadership Programs and First Year Experience will now hold the Make Your Mark Competition each semester rather than just once per year. This competition is a social entrepreneurship challenge in which teams of three or four students take just $10 of start-up cash and implement an idea that creates positive and sustainable change in the community. In addition to engaging in social entrepreneurship and having an impact, members of the winning team will receive scholarships for one free three-credit course at Lawrence Tech. The team formation deadline is Sept. 21, and the idea pitch session will be held Sept. 28. Teams have until the Showcase and Awards event on Nov. 16 to implement their ideas. Students interested in taking part in the competition should visit www.ltu.edu/leadership to learn more or contact Katie Hayes at khayes@ltu.edu . The spring 2011 semester, the team of Krysta Foster, Dee Hewitt, Brian Game, Jamiil Gaston, and Megan Zeigler won the competition by developing a design for a sustainable bus shelter for the 10 Mile Road bus stop outside Lawrence Tech. The city of Southfield is currently exploring the widespread use of this design. See the story of the winning team’s proposal at this link.
