Lawrence Tech student wins NASA scholarship and internship

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

Stephanie Shevenock

Stephanie Shevenock of Warren, a mechanical engineering major at Lawrence Technological University, is one of 25 students nationwide who have won scholarships and summer internships for the 2011-2012 academic year from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Shevenock will receive $15,000 per year to cover tuition costs for two years and a $10,000 stipend during an internship next summer with NASA.

These students will have the opportunity to intern with NASA researchers and directly work on projects such as managing air traffic more efficiently; reducing noise, fuel consumption and emissions; and improving safety.

“We are proud to welcome these scholars to the NASA family as members of a nationwide team of researchers who are pursuing an ambitious set of aeronautics technology development goals,” said Jaiwon Shin, associate administrator for NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate. “We are excited about this opportunity to act as mentors, and we fully expect the students will teach us a few things too.”

Shevenock has been a member of Lawrence Tech’s Aero Design SAE teams that finished in the top 10 in national competition for the past two years. She has been named team captain for the 2012 team. She is president of the Lawrence Tech chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and earlier this year went to Washington, D.C., as a student lobbyist for Citizens for Space Exploration.

“NASA is Stephanie’s dream job and one of the key reasons she is studying engineering,” said Associate Professor Andrew Gerhart, Lawrence Tech’s SAE Aero Design faculty advisor. “She has worked very hard to obtain the NASA scholarship and internship, and will represent Lawrence Tech extremely well.”
