Lucas selected for Campus Compact fellowship

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Phil Lucas

Lawrence Tech junior Phil Lucas was one of 135 students in 30 states to be honored by Campus Compact in the first group of Newman Civic Fellows.

Nominated by their college or university presidents, the new Newman Civil Fellows are promising college student leaders who have demonstrated a commitment to finding solutions for challenges facing their communities. Through service, research, and advocacy, they are making the most of their college experiences to better understand the root causes of social issues and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can and does play in building a better world,” said Campus Compact President Maureen Curley.

Lucas has been elected president of Student Government at Lawrence Tech for the 2011-12 academic year.

Lucas is the founder of the campus-wide recycling initiative at Lawrence Tech. He has worked tirelessly the past two years to mobilize the campus recycling efforts among students, staff, and administrators. He is also heavily involved in service learning with the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and is active in campus-wide volunteer programs including Make a Difference Day and LTU Day of Service.

Sophomores and juniors at four-year institutions and second-year students at two-year institutions were eligible for nomination. Campus Compact member presidents could nominate only one student. Newman Civic Fellows will receive certificates, join a national listserv of fellows, and will have multiple opportunities to network throughout the year through state and regional conferences and other gatherings.

Lawrence Tech is a member of Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents – representing some 6 million students – who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility.
