Coleman Foundation advances entrepreneurial education at Lawrence Tech

 James Stevens (L), Suzanne Levine and Ghassan Azar are this year’s Coleman Fellows at Lawrence Tech, and Don Reimer (R) is the program director for the Coleman Faculty Entrepreneurial Fellows Program. The Chicago-based Coleman Foundation has funded three faculty fellowships to expand entrepreneurial education at Lawrence Technological University. “Three Lawrence Tech instructors have been designated a Coleman Fellow and charged with creating learning opportunities that will fulfill the foundation’s mission to foster self-employment education and awareness,” said Don Reimer, assistant director of Entrepreneurial Programs in the College of Engineering and program director of the Coleman Faculty Entrepreneurial Fellows Program. James Stevens, assistant professor in the College of Architecture and Design, is creating a course in “digital entrepreneurship” that will bring computer-aided capabilities now standard in the manufacturing arena into the architecture realm. It will assist architects in fabricating buildings on the screen and using the renderings to establish cost, construction, and materials needs for proposals and project management. Suzanne Levine, director of media communication in the College of Arts and Sciences, is expanding the scope of her Writing for Electronic, Print and Media course to include the entrepreneurial aspect of pitching creative ideas, finding funding, and bringing a project through to completion. “The idea is to support the concept of self-employment in the arts, which is what freelancers need to learn,” said Levine. Ghassan Azar, professor in computer science in the College of Arts and Sciences, is using the grant to integrate an understanding of entrepreneurship into his course by working with students to simulate creating a company, preparing proposals, estimating costs, and understanding basic business principles. The Coleman Foundation is a private, independent grant-making organization that funds educational institutions that offer entrepreneurship training and support throughout the United States. The grants at Lawrence Tech will cover costs, supplies, travel, and research.
