Lady Blue Devils are competitive in the early going
Friday, December 3rd, 2010
The Lady Devils lost a tough volleyball match to Wayne State, 4-1, at home on Nov. 20.
Although it was a loss, the score does not do justice to the Devils who were within a five-point margin in every set. Abby Schroeder led the team with six ace serves and 7 kills, while a newcomer, freshmen Alicia Miller, had a respectable five kills and nine digs. Leading the team on defense were Laura Saler and Co-captain Joy Sportel.
Coach Nicole Deaver stated “the team is coming together very nicely” and “team chemistry
is quickly developing,” which is impressive because half the team is comprised of new members.
For the beginning of the season, Deaver said the team “has been very competitive in all of the matches,” and the team is “really looking forward to the spring [semester] when our schedule really picks up.”
The team’s first fall tournament of the season was hosted by Michigan State. After the day started out on a tough note falling to the number one overall ranked team from Ball State, the Lady Devils dominated Ferris State B team in two games. However, the Lady Devils fell to Michigan State B in two games, 25-21 and 25-17, in the first round.
Team Co-captain Abby Schroeder led the team in blocks for the day as one of the starting middle blockers. Also Freshman Alicia Miller had a great debut as setter and ringside hitter for the team.
“I had high expectations going into this tournament but after seeing the team really come together and play as a team even though we have been practicing for less than a month, my hopes for this team have grown even higher,” Coach Deaver commented.
Come support your Lady Devils at their next home game Jan. 22!
