Blue Devils earn split with a strong opponent
Friday, November 12th, 2010
The hockey Blue Devils’ six-game winning streak was brought to an end with a 4-2 loss against Calvin College on Nov. 6 at Southfield Sports Arena. The Blue Devils beat Calvin the night before with a hard-fought 5-4 overtime victory, however. It was an impressive victory because, as Lawrence Tech Assistant Coach Vince Doyle stated, Calvin College is known as “a very good team and are noted for their program.” In the rematch on the Blue Devils’ home ice, the first period, which was 1-0 with Calvin in the lead, was rather quiet goal-wise compared to the two periods that followed. The second period was a tough one for the Blue Devils, with Calvin scoring two power play goals, making the score 3-0. According to Doyle, the Blue Devils have “established a reputation of coming back late in the game.” The team definitely pulled through with two goals by Craig Schmehl and Austin Karpy. However, Calvin scored with five minutes, and although the Blue Devils rallied at the end, they were not successful. Doyle said the “star of the weekend” was goalie Cyrus Sarosh, “who kept the team in it at the end.” Although it was a tough loss, Assistant Coach Frank Vellucci stated, “The team had a solid performance and we are proud of the effort put forth.” Come support your Blue Devils when they play at the Southfield Sports Arena on Friday, Nov. 19, at 8:30 p.m. against Adrian, and Saturday, Nov.20, at 8 p.m. against the University of Michigan Flint. – Rachel Yarbrough; photos by Merissa Ferguson
