Blue Devils take to the ice for the 2010-11 campaign
Friday, October 22nd, 2010
Blue Devil hockey season is now in full swing after the Oct. 8 home opener against Muskegon Community College. The student section was packed with numerous bodies painted in blue and white, and a chorus of blue vuvuzelas greeted the players as they took the ice.
Assistant Coach Vince Doyle said “the players were excited to get out there and play” in the home opener.
The first period started out quickly with Muskegon scoring a goal at 18:48. It took the Blue Devils a while to gain momentum, but they answered back with a goal scored by Joe Donelko at the 8:14 mark. Muskegon scored again at the 5:29, however, it was not long until the Blue Devils came back. Lawrence Tech defenseman John Fick had what one fan called “a wicked wrister from the point” at 3:19. A goal by Mike Smartt near the end of the period gave Lawrence Tech a 3-2 lead.
Muskegon scored two goals in the second period. One problem that plagued the Blue Devils throughout the game was the number of penalties given out. Doyle said the high level of intesnity “led to more penalties which really hurt us.” Although the period was scoreless for the Blue Devils, Forward James Oh kept up the intensity and “took the play to the Muskegon Jayhawks” and finished with a “very strong game,” Doyle stated.
The third period started off with Muskegon scoring quickly after face off, and the Blue Devils began to really push the net. At 14:08, Fick scored his second goal that Doyle dubbed “the play of the game” with an unassisted goal, and at 8:57 Shaun Murphy (32) scored the last goal for the Lawrence Tech But Muskegon added to more goals to make the final score, 7-5.
Doyle stated after the game “this was not our strongest opening” however he did say the team “started off fairly well, but the other team came out with a jump.”
The next home hockey game will be Friday, Oct. 22, against Jackson Community College. Come out at 8:30 p.m. to support your Blue Devils!
