Six media communication students have won scholarships for creating public service announcement (PSA) videos for the 3for5 Foundation, a non-profit social fund-raising initiative to provide clean water in the developing world. John Williams, Megan Ziegler, and Juan Ochoa each won a $500 scholarship for winning the inaugural Community Connections competition for students in media communication and business management. Scott Maiale, Anhar Alhaithami and Brian Dundas each won a $250 scholarship for finishing second. The Community Connections competition will be held every semester semester with a different nonprofit in order to connect Lawrence Tech students to the local, national, and global community. Three teams submitted eight 30-second video PSAs for review by 3for5 Foundation President David Fuelling, who said the students did a good job of capturing the foundation’s message. “A lot of people have great ideas, but to bring an idea to completion requires you to put your nose to the grindstone,” Fuelling said. To view the videos, go to the 3for5 Foundation blog . The foundation is based in Salt Lake City, although Fuelling and other board members live in southeast Michigan. Fuelling said it is estimated that a billion people in the developing world do not have access to clean drinking water, and that a child dies of diarrhea every 21 seconds. The 3for5 Foundation wants to create a mass movement to fight this global problem by getting people to donate $5 and then recruit three friends to support the cause.
