Architecture students James Oh and Davey McConnell have been selected as the two student employees of the year at Lawrence Tech as part of a competition sponsored by the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators. McConnell has been the student assistant in the Office of Leadership Programs since August 2008. She utilized her design skills to take the lead with logos and publicity materials needed in the office. “She often goes above and beyond basic instructions to produce work that we didn’t even know we wanted until we saw it,” said supervisor Melissa Grunow, leadership curriculum coordinator at Lawrence Tech. Grunow said McConnell’s work grew exponentially in her second year as the office grew from one person to three. She has also gone above and beyond her desk duties by personally participating in events and projects organized by the leadership office. “As an employee in the Office of Leadership Programs, it’s important for the student assistant to demonstrate leadership qualities,” Grunow said. “Davey not only assisted the office in planning and coordinating leadership events, she often attends them.” Oh has been a Tech Rec student assistant for two and a half years. Student Recreation Director Alan McLaughlin praised the passion, energy and positive attitude that he has brought to the many tasks involved in ensuring that there is a fun and safe environment at the Ridler Field House. Oh also has gone above and beyond the responsibilities of his job by taking responsibility for the mixed martial arts (MMA) club at Lawrence Tech. He teaches a class three times a week and has increased participation to more than 20. “He takes the time to teach martial arts to other students so they can better themselves in mind, body, and spirit,” McLaughlin said. “James has single-handedly promoted, taught, and expanded our MMA club.”
