On Feb. 18 form noon to 5 p.m., Lawrence Tech celebrated Chinese Spring Festival and the Year of the Tiger with the Hua Xia Student Association in Café Lawrence. The Hua Xia student association and the Division of Student Affairs hosted the event for the entire campus community, with traditional music, and a delicious buffet of Chinese food. Lawrence Tech President Lewis Walker and Dean of Students Kevin Finn spoke. Guo Nian literally means “Year-Pass Eve” or “New Year Eve,” and this is the most important festival of the traditional Chinese holidays. In China it is the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune, and in hopes of making way for good luck to come in. Jian Zhi-Fu – Windows and doors will be decorated with red paper cut-outs and couplets with the themes of “Happiness,” “Wealth,” and “Longevity.” Fang Pao & Hong Bao – Families end the night with firecrackers, and early the next morning, the children greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and in turn receive money in red envelopes. Lawrence Tech welcomed over 320 guests to the buffet by giving everyone a nametag with their name in Chinese, and a traditional red envelope containing a raffle ticket. Gifts from the Lawrence Tech Bookstore were then raffled at the end of lunch. A short video was played showing scenes from New Year’s traditions in China. Chinese music was played during the meal, and at the end of the afternoon, a classic Chinese movie, Farewell My Concubine, was shown. ![]() Eula Muckleroy and Leslie Wilson of Student Activities receive their Chinese nametags from Jingtian Miao (L) and Yikai Yang. Taher Dining Services provided traditionalAmerican Chinese fare, and the students brought in scrumptious specialty dishes, including mixed seafood delight, Korean barbeque, coconut chicken, and traditional red bean buns. The dessert buns are meant to look like peaches, a symbol of good health and luck for the coming year. Lawrence Tech is honored to host our annual Chinese New Year’s celebration, a wonderful coming together the entire community enjoys and anticipates. See you next new year!
