  • Many of the members of Lawrence Tech’s Formula SAE team were on hand for the open house held at the Applied Research Center on Jan. 26 by the Mechanical Engineering Competition Student Projects Teams.
  • Baja SAE team members Lance Lamson (L) and Michelle Campbell (R) talk with faculty advisor Joe DeRose about fabricating parts for their vehicle.
  • The new Formula Hybrid team includes (L-R) Patrick McInally, Nick Vella, Adrian Snyder, and Dan Whitting.
  • Lawrence Tech SAE Aero Design team members Dan Weitzmann and Mike Martinico work on the leading edge of their plane’s wing under the watchful eye of faculty advisor Andrew Gerhart.
  • The Jan. 26 open house at the Applied Research Center turned out to be a long work session for Concrete Canoe team members (L-R) Chris Mattson, Adam Dumas, Ben Stenzel, and Tim Swartzbaugh.

The Mechanical Engineering Competition Student Projects Teams held an open house at the Applied Research Center on the evening of Jan. 26.

This year all five teams moved into new design labs at the Applied Research Center. The open house provided an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to see the new facilities. Each team made a presentation in an effort to recruit students for next year’s team.

Team members from Formula SAE, Formula Hybrid, Baja SAE, Aero Design SAE teams and Concrete Canoe were on hand to answer questions about the design stage, the construction phase and the actual races in national competitions. The first four teams will represent Lawrence Tech in competitions sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers, while the Concrete Canoe competition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Lawrence Tech has a long tradition of achievement in racing competitions. The practical challenges that the student project teams face are an important part of their education, and the experience they gain pays off when they enter their professions following graduation.
