Advancing your leadership potential is a key distinction at Lawrence Tech
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
By Lewis N. Walker President After more than three years of planning and implementation, I am proud to announce that Lawrence Tech’s undergraduate leadership curriculum is now fully in place for all students who enter the university this fall. With the junior and senior year leadership courses now available, participation is required for all students entering this fall or later and is encouraged for students who enrolled previously. While many other universities talk about leadership development, Lawrence Tech’s comprehensive plan ensures that every undergraduate will learn and experience what leadership is all about. Leadership courses in each undergraduate year culminate in a leadership portfolio that showcases your development for employers. The leadership curriculum provides you with theories and models of leadership, encourages self-reflection to develop personal leadership philosophies, and supports the building of leadership skills in teamwork, innovation, risk-taking, communication, civic responsibility, and personal integrity. We support further leadership development by encouraging your active participation in extracurricular leadership experiences. Service learning and civic engagement are essential in a comprehensive leadership program that emphasizes academic preparedness and experiential learning both in and out of the classroom. Studying in another country and cultural environment also develops personal skills that are important for leadership development. Lawrence Tech’s study abroad programs have expanded to include England, Italy, South Africa, as well as opportunities to volunteer in China and Haiti. Going overseas for the summer or a semester is the best way I know to develop a global view. I hope you will make your time at Lawrence Tech a life-changing experience. Best wishes for a wonderful and rewarding academic experience this year and beyond!
