Construction managers play a crucial role in the overall building process. Whether they work for companies or as independent consultants, construction managers plan, direct, and coordinate a wide variety of projects, including the building of all types of residential, commercial, and industrial structures, roads, bridges, wastewater treatment plants, schools, and hospitals. They are responsible for overseeing the entire project, which includes scheduling and coordinating all design and construction processes, as well as the selection, hiring, and supervision of specialty trade contractors.

Construction jobs today are more complex than ever, and it takes solid professional management to bring even a relatively modest job to successful completion. Construction managers are involved with all stages of the planning, design, and construction in order to control the time and cost it takes to complete the project, while maintaining the quality of the construction.

Advanced positions in construction management involve such activities as defining the responsibilities and structure of the project management team, organizing and leading by implementing project controls, defining roles and responsibilities and developing communication protocols, and identifying the elements of project design and construction likely to give rise to disputes and claims.

Employment of construction managers is projected to increase faster than the average for all occupations over the next decade. More construction managers will be needed as the level of construction activity continues to evolve due to population and business growth. The increasing complexity of construction projects will also boost demand for specialized management-level personnel within the construction industry. Sophisticated technology and the proliferation of laws setting standards for buildings and construction materials, worker safety, energy efficiency, environmental protection, and the potential for adverse litigation have further complicated the construction process. Advances in building materials and construction methods, the need to replace portions of the nation’s infrastructure, and the growing number of multipurpose buildings and energy efficient structures will further add to the demand for more construction managers.

A strong technical background, combined with excellent management skills, is required to estimate jobs, manage a job site, solve problems, and take on overall project management.

Designed for working professionals with experience in the construction industry and those interested in entering the field, the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management program at Lawrence Technological University was developed with input from the Associated General Contractors, Greater Detroit Chapter. This practical program is set up for full- and part-time students and consists of a well-rounded core of management classes along with a strong concentration in construction science and construction engineering. The program exceeds the requirements set by the American Council for Construction Education. Small class sizes and the ability to choose from a collection of focused electives make this program highly responsive to your individual needs.

The objective is to provide students with a strong understanding of the fundamental principles and practical application of construction engineering technology and management. Students will also be prepared to:

1.  Identify the problem, formulate and analyze engineering alternatives, and solve the problem individually as well as in a team environment;

2.  Assume management and leadership roles in the technology industry; 

3. Communicate effectively in a professional engineering environment; and

4. Pursue professional careers and engage in life-long learning. 

 

Student Outcomes

The educational outcomes of the Department of Engineering Technology at Lawrence Technological University are to produce graduates with:

  1. an ability to select and apply the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of the discipline to broadly-defined engineering technology activities;
  2. an ability to select and apply a knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering, and technology to engineering technology problems that require the application of principles and applied procedures and methodologies;
