In a research lab setting, you’ll genetically engineer bacteria, purify and quantify proteins, and learn how to clone genes. You’ll apply modern DNA profiling techniques to solve crimes and use high-tech tools to diagnose diseases and track infectious outbreaks. Your days will be filled with hands-on experimentation.

Design Basics

Design shapes the environments in which we live, work, and play. In this hands-on studio, you’ll explore the design process and how to create works that are thoughtful, sustainable, and sensitive. Employing the core principles and elements of art, you’ll participate in real-life design situations and experience firsthand how sound design can be applied to great impact. You’ll also learn from visiting artists, in-class critiques, and field trips that include a visit to the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Graphic Design

Graphic design is all around us, whether it’s the logo of your hometown team, a poster promoting your favorite band, or the icons on your phone. This camp will emulate a real-world studio in which you’ll use industry-standard techniques and software to create a portfolio-ready creative project. Under the guidance of design professionals, you’ll learn graphic design tools and techniques, such as typography, composition, image-making, and color theory.

Machining and Fabricating
9 a.m.–4 p.m., $750 day camp/$850 residential
Master the skills required to machine and fabricate in a manufacturing environment similar to those you’d find in the automotive, medical, or aerospace industries. After you learn shop, personal, and equipment safety, you’ll interpret blueprints, read precision gauges, and craft components from various types of material. You’ll also be exposed to the electrical side of manufacturing and learn electrical safety, circuit basics, and create a project using electrical soldering. You’ll also operate CNC equipment and experiment with G-Code.

Have you ever wondered if buying a car is better than leasing one? Whether it’s better to rent a home than own one? How to use credit cards and other loans effectively? How to manage your savings and investments for a wealthy and financially secure future? In this interactive camp, you’ll learn to apply the tools and skills you need to make wise financial decisions, from daily choices to acquiring the discipline to make long-term decisions.

Mathematics in Action

Have you ever wondered how a phone keeps your data secret? Why some patterns in nature repeat over and over on smaller and smaller scales? How sports teams know which players to select in the draft? Mathematical models provide a quantitative platform for understanding, predicting, and decision making in nearly every aspect of life. You’ll explore the power of mathematics to solve real-life problems through hands-on, thought-provoking projects and in-depth discussions. With your fellow campers, you’ll also tackle open-ended modeling problems, develop practical solutions, and present your results.

Want to explore the human mind, see how the brain works, and learn about the secrets of our behavior? In this camp you’ll conduct experiments in human perception, memory, consciousness, language, and social behavior using current research techniques and high-tech devices. You’ll learn about behavioral conditioning by training animals to perform specific actions in controlled experimental situations. You’ll also be introduced to the main techniques for treating psychological problems so that you can play the role of a clinical psychologist.

Research Writing

Don't be intimidated by research papers! Build your confidence and learn the skills needed to research and write in the academic field of your choice. You’ll pursue a personalized research agenda, culminating with a multimedia project of your design. While engaging with the important issues in the academic discipline you choose, you will work with the esteemed publications and databases in the field. You’ll learn the organization, style, and research methods expected of student writers, preparing yourself for university coursework and future research projects.

Sketching and Visual Communication
9 a.m.–5 p.m., $750 day camp/$850 residential
This camp is designed to develop your drawing and representation skills in charcoal, graphite, roller ball, and marker. You’ll observe and draw the objects around you, our built environment, and images from photographs. You’ll also learn about the tools that allow for the connection between hand drawing and digital media. All your projects will help you develop an understanding of foundational drawing at the college level. You’ll also meet visiting artists, take field trips, and benefit from in-class critiques of your work and that of your fellow campers.
