Department of Art + Design

The Department of Art and Design prepares students to critically engage creative inquiry, visual literacy, and design thinking, with an emphasis upon practical application and social responsibility. This is accomplished through a commitment to history, theory, and making within both traditional and emerging practices. Our methods embrace the dialogue between physical and digital approaches and technologies, and are designed to support the education of a new generation of innovators.

We believe that developing your creativity is key to advancing in any art or design career you choose. Whether you are interested in Industrial DesignGraphic Design, Transportation Design, Game Art, or Interaction Design, LTU’s Department of Art and Design offers you a diverse range of studies from three-dimensional design and photography to drawing, graphic design, and animation. Your dedicated professors will help you develop your skills in a cross-disciplinary environment in which LTU’s signature “theory and practice” method of instruction infuses everything you do.

Programs in the Department of Art + Design

Game Art

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Game Art offered at Lawrence Technological University is a project-focused multi-disciplinary program. It not only provides students with the tools and skills needed to succeed in the field of Game Design, but has graduates hitting the ground running with full-fledged game releases before graduation.

Graphic Design

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design prepares you to succeed in this exciting and competitive field and encourages the connection between intellectual inquiry and hands-on making.

Industrial Design

The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design has a central theme of design integration that weaves together creative art, engineering, leadership, entrepreneurship, and sustainability to produce a cohesive product. The structure of this program is unique, as it is designed to collaborate with industry professionals on the design and development of product concepts during all four years of the core curriculum.

Interaction Design

The BFA in Interaction Design program explores the use of graphics, images, and objects in time-based media. Students learn key methods and principles of interaction and user experience design: prototyping, iterative design cycle, user studies as well as conceptual models, feedback, and affordances. Students also study information visualization concepts and principles for interactive information systems, interactive instructions, and animated information graphics.

Interior Architecture

Interior architecture stands at the intersection of architecture, design of the built environment, and conservation as it relates to the issues of sustainability. Lawrence Tech’s program focuses on the re-use of existing structures and their subsequent transformation into new space and/or form, always keeping sustainable and technological issues at the forefront.

Social Practice

The MFA in Social Practice is a new program at LTU. It has received approval to accept students from the LTU Board of Directors and is currently seeking plan approval from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The College of Architecture and Design anticipates opening the program for enrollment in the fall of 2018.

Transportation Design

The Bachelor of Science in Transportation Design allows students to blend their creative design talent with a comprehensive understanding of automotive technology. Always forward looking and with industry backing, the program offers students experience and skills unavailable elsewhere.

Architecture + Interior Architecture

In recognition of the need for individuals with a wide-ranging set of professional skills, Lawrence Technological University offers a dual-degree program leading to both a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Interior Architecture. This dual program prepares students to become fully qualified architects who specialize in the design of building interiors.
